What are Concrete Roof Tiles
Concrete roof tiles are a beautifully economic alternative to the other more expensive tiling systems. Concrete roof tiles were first used in Bavaria just over 100 years ago and some of these early concrete tile roofs still exist today. When these tiles were originally used, they were poured by hand into molds and then taken out of the mold to be used on a roof. Since then, this process has now been fully automated and these tiles are now manufactured in large industrial plants. Colour pigments are also now quite commonly added and thus allow you a wide variety of colours, including colours very similar to clay tiles except much cheaper.
KDF Roofing recommends concrete tiles when you want an affordable tiled roof. It is, however, very important to keep in mind that concrete tiled roofing isn’t as long lasting as other tiled roofing methods.
Advantages Of Concrete Roof Riles
- Reliability & Durability – Concrete roof tiles handle a variety of weather conditions incredibly well. They have absolutely no problem with hail storms and can survive wind speeds of up to 200 Kmph. These tiles are also virtually maintenance free.
- Cost – Concrete roof tiles are mass manufactured and due to this have an incredibly low material cost. They are also virtually maintenance free once installed and as such they are a fantastic option when you are on a tight budget.
- Aesthetically pleasing in multiple colours – Concrete can have a wide variety of colour pigments added to give a specific hue. There are certain standard colours but if you ask us, we can have our suppliers make a custom batch for you.
What are the Disadvantages of Concrete Roof Tiles
Concrete Roof tiles are a more economical way of roofing and because of that has a number of disadvantages.
- Life Span – Most concrete tiles are only estiamted to last between 40 to 50 years reliably, compared to other roofing materials, this is a relatively short life span
- Fading – The pigments in concrete roof tiles fade far faster than the concrete wears out.
- Requires Experienced teams – Concrete roof tiles are relatively thin pieces of concrete and so not only does the installation have to be completed by experts, such as KDF Roofing, but whenever you have people working on your roof, they have to be incredibly careful not to break the tiles.
- Weight – concrete roof tiles add considerable weight to your structure, this increases the costs of supporting structures and increases the number of support columns necessary in your build.
What does a Concrete Roof Tiling Cost
There are two prices attached to any roof that you need to keep in mind. The first is the upfront price, this is what the roofing material, installation, and finishes will total to. The second is the long term cost in maintenance, damage and eventually replacing the material when it comes to the end of its life.
Cooncrete roof tiles are one of the most in-expensive materials in upfront costs to use but when you take into account the lifespan of a concrete tiled roof. It ends up working out to being one of the most expensive roof tiling methods on the market today.
